Católica meet Pitana

The FEF announced on X on Monday night that Pitana, the former Argentine international referee, met representatives of Universidad Católica “to review the plays raised by the club.” The federation said the meeting reflected its “commitment to transparency and permanent dialogue” with the clubs.

According to Primicias, Católica directors Luis Roggiero and Diego Santos were due to meet Pitana on Monday afternoon. The club had already filed a complaint about Bryan Loayza’s refereeing in its 2-1 defeat to Liga de Quito on September 20, including a possible Liga de Quito handball by Ricardo Adé that was not given. Club president Pablo Ortiz said Católica were still considering a complaint about Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Barcelona SC.

In Guayaquil, VAR ruled out an early goal by Mauro Díaz for a very tight offside against José Fajardo, and Ortiz also pointed to a possible handball by Barcelona SC defender Gustavo Vallecilla in the 61st minute that was not given. “We had been promised an audit of the VAR,” Ortiz said, as quoted by Primicias. “There are games where not all the cameras work, and we don’t know about it.”

Not everyone sides with Católica. After studying the replay, El Futbolero and Studiofutbol both wrote that the offside call on Díaz’s goal was correct. Neither the FEF nor the club has said what came out of Monday’s meeting.

Católica, fourth on 52 points, visit leaders Independiente del Valle on Friday, October 23 (4:30 PM ET) at Estadio Banco Guayaquil, IDV’s next chance to clinch the 2026 title. Every LigaPro fixture is on our Schedule page.
