Piero Hincapié got his first Arsenal start since the Champions League final on Tuesday night. He was the best player on the pitch, but it ended in one of the biggest upsets in League Cup history. League Two side Fleetwood Town drew 1-1 with the Premier League champions at Highbury Stadium and won the shootout 5-3, knocking Arsenal out of the Carabao Cup in the fourth round.
Left-back, then centre-back
Hincapié started at left-back and played all 90 minutes. He had the first chance of the night, heading over a Max Dowman free-kick after an early stoppage for drone interference, Arsenal’s match report said. When Marli Salmon came off at half-time, he moved into the middle, and ESPN said he dealt calmly with everything Fleetwood sent into the box.
FotMob gave him an 8.2, the highest rating in the game, and named him player of the match. According to ESPN, he completed 89% of his passes, made three key passes, won five of seven aerial duels and had five clearances and two recoveries. He didn’t take a penalty in the shootout.

How Arsenal went out
Fulham loanee Aaron Loupalo-Bi gave Fleetwood the lead after 21 minutes, and Viktor Gyökeres equalised early in the second half. Arsenal pushed for a winner, but 16-year-old Dowman was sent off late on, and it went to penalties. Both sides scored their first three, Andy Cannon put Fleetwood 4-3 up, Jay Lynch saved from Bruno Guimarães and 19-year-old Conor Haughey sent Fleetwood into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history.
What’s next
This was a big night for Hincapié’s fitness. He missed games earlier this month with an ankle problem. Arsenal visit Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, November 1, at 11:30 AM ET, and he will want to keep his place. It also comes two weeks before Ecuador’s November friendlies against Costa Rica and Bolivia. His numbers are on our Players Tracker.
