Independiente del Valle’s under-16s beat Manchester City 5-0 at the Messi Cup in the United States on Friday. The game was part of the Copa Plata, the bracket for 9th to 16th place, and this match was for the 13th to 16th places.
Few people saw this coming. Edgardo Onofa’s side lost 2-1 to Inter Miami, drew 1-1 with Atlético de Madrid and lost 4-2 to Benfica in Group C, so they finished bottom with one point, El Comercio reported.
The scorers
IDV’s official academy account lists Luis Lastra, Keyller Ibarra, Jhorman Camacho, Isaac Quiñónez and Diego Perlaza (two) as scorers. That adds up to six names for five goals, so at least one credit is probably a mistake. ESPN Ecuador confirms that Ibarra won the ball back and scored the fifth.
Journalist Xavier Segovia says Perlaza scored twice and was named the match MVP, calling him “la gran figura del compromiso.” We have not been able to confirm the MVP award independently.
What’s next
According to Segovia, IDV play on Saturday against the winner of Inter Miami vs Inter Milan. It is one more reminder that the Sangolquí academy that developed Moisés Caicedo, Piero Hincapié and Willian Pacho keeps producing.
