Bruno Caicedo needed less than a minute. The 21-year-old Ecuadorian winger set up two of Vancouver Whitecaps’ goals in Sunday’s 5-1 win over Seattle Sounders at BC Place, and FotMob gave him an 8.7, matching Adonis Preciado as the best rating by an Ecuadorian abroad this weekend.
Caicedo started on the left, the only change to Vancouver’s XI from the midweek win over San Diego FC. The club pointed out it was the first time Diaby, Gauld, Caicedo and White had started together as an attacking quartet. Fifty-seven seconds in, Caicedo took a pass from Ryan Gauld and chipped a cross to the back post, and Brian White headed it into the top corner. In the 53rd minute he drove down the left again and cut the ball back for White’s second, which made it 4-1. That goal was White’s 100th for the Whitecaps across all competitions. Caicedo was booked and came off after 63 minutes.
The result completed a Cascadia Cup sweep for Vancouver, who had already clinched first place in the Western Conference the day before. They finish the regular season at CF Montréal on Saturday, November 7 (4:00 PM ET), and open the playoffs at home on November 22.
Form at the right time
This comes four days after he scored off the bench in the 4-1 win over San Diego FC. According to FotMob, Caicedo now has six goals and five assists in 24 MLS games this season (nine starts, 1,005 minutes) since joining from Barcelona SC.
It also comes days before Marcelo Gallardo names his squad for the November friendlies against Costa Rica (Friday, November 13, 7:00 PM ET, Quito) and Bolivia (Tuesday, November 17, Guayaquil). Caicedo’s only senior call-up so far came before the World Cup, for the May 30 friendly against Saudi Arabia, but he did not play and was left out of the final World Cup squad. TUDN has reported, as cited by Bolavip, that he is one of three players being watched by Gallardo’s staff, along with LAFC’s Sergio Vásquez and Atlante’s Jhojan Julio. Vásquez also scored on Sunday night, a 90th-minute goal off the bench in LAFC’s 3-1 home loss to Minnesota United. El Futbolero said Caicedo is “raising his hand” for the November window, but nothing official has been announced yet.
