Moisés Caicedo wore the Chelsea armband at Anfield on Wednesday night, but he didn’t make it to the shootout. He was taken off after 68 minutes of a 1-1 draw with Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round, and Liverpool went through 6-5 on penalties.

A forced change

Caicedo came off in a double change with Malo Gusto, and Valentín Barco replaced him. Xabi Alonso said afterwards that Chelsea were “a little bit forced” with their substitutions. “After we had to deal with Max, Moi had little problems. Malo as well, he had cramps,” he said, according to RotoWire. Alonso said he hopes both will be available for Saturday’s Premier League game against Manchester United.

Before he went off, Caicedo set Chelsea up for one of their best moments, playing Morgan Rogers through with a fine pass, but Rogers missed. Rogers did score from the penalty spot after 40 minutes, and Cody Gakpo equalised from the spot three minutes later.

Why Ecuador will be watching

Caicedo is the centre of Marcelo Gallardo’s Ecuador midfield, and La Tri’s next window is close: Costa Rica at the Atahualpa in Quito on Friday, November 13, at 7:00 PM ET, then Bolivia in Guayaquil on November 17. Nothing suggests a long layoff yet, and Alonso’s comments point to a short-term problem rather than an injury. The Manchester United game on Saturday will tell us more.
