The Mini Tri’s trip to Baku is over. Ecuador’s under-15s lost 3-1 to Venezuela in their last game at the FIFA U-15 World Cup & Festival, which kicked off at 1:00 AM ET on Friday (midnight in Ecuador). The result leaves Cristian Cachipuendo’s team 16th in the Tier A standings after losing the game for 15th place.
Darwin Zamora scored Ecuador’s goal in the 20th minute, according to FIFA’s match data.
A great group, then a hard last week
The first week could hardly have gone better. Ecuador topped Group U unbeaten with four wins and a draw, scoring 17 goals and conceding one, then beat Bulgaria on penalties in the round of 32. After that the opponents got bigger. Spain won the round of 16 4-1, Poland won 4-0 in the placement bracket, Egypt went through on a 5-4 shootout after a 1-1 draw, and Venezuela finished it off on Friday.
Ecuador didn’t win any of their last five games inside 90 minutes, but the bigger picture for a group of 14- and 15-year-olds is ten competitive games in a week against the rest of the world, and a Group U campaign that showed real attacking depth.
